Simone Biles was named AIPS Athlete of the Year!
Simone Biles is an outstanding gymnast who worked hard and achieved the title of four-time Olympic champion. Recently she has also been named the Best Female Athlete of 2016 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), following a poll of journalists from 110 countries.
382 sports journalists took part in voting for champions of this year. Simone Biles, who won four golds and a bronze medal at her first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, was lucky to earn 15.24% of the votes in women’s category.
Biles is the first male or female gymnast to be named as AIPS Best Athlete of the Year; indeed it is the first time any gymnast has even featured in the top three of the poll. For her dazzling successes in Rio, she also received the Associated Press’s Athlete of the Year prize as well as the “Champion of the Champions 2016” award from the French sports daily newspaper L’Equipe.
Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was named AIPS Best Male Athlete of the year for a record sixth time.
